Ritsona camp is located in an isolated industrial area 75 km from Athens. It currently hosts approximately 2,000 people, of whom only half are eligible to receive food.

I do not want to wake her up in the morning for school. It’s better to sleep and not be hungry.

Against this backdrop, Lighthouse Relief offers mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) through sports, educational, and recreational activities for ages 3-25.

Since starting this program in Rtisona in 2016, we have come to understand the tremendous impact MHPSS has on residents' lives. It is especially important for those who are too young to remember life outside the camp or who struggle with feeling like prisoners despite having done nothing wrong.

Regular interaction with our caring and highly-skilled team members helps people overcome stress and loneliness and regain a semblance of normalcy. At the same time, our carefully designed activities afford opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence, learn to regulate emotions, and make friends across gender, national, or linguistic lines.

The sports, creative workshops, language classes, library, board games, jam sessions, and other offerings serve as antidotes to the boredom, anxiety, and hardships of living in a state of legal limbo within the grim confines of an isolated, increasingly closed camp.

OUR SAFE SPACES IN RITSONA CAMP

LITTLE LIGHTHOUSE

A child-friendly space for ages 3-14 offering arts and crafts, sports, and games that promote healthy habits, gender equality, and respect for others.

In this space, we also run twice-daily sessions for 3-6 year-olds to help them find stability, develop social skills, and learn techniques to regulate their emotions.

LIGHTHOUSE YOUTH AND COMMUNITY CENTRE

A welcoming drop-in space for residents aged 15+ to drink tea and make use of foosball, musical instruments, sewing machines, a multilingual library, etc.

It also offers community-led football tournaments, a volleyball club, and workshops ranging from guitar to photography to English, and other activities based on requests from residents.

LIGHTHOUSE WOMEN

A community-run female-friendly space for women to relax and socialize away from unwanted male attention.

Equipped with beauty supplies, arts and crafts material, and other supplies, it invites women (and their daughters (if they chose to bring them) to take a break from the dreary monotony of life in the camp.

We also offer daily women's and girls' sports sessions and language classes through this space.
